Tasting - "Crane Lake Riesling 2013"

Name: Crane Lake Riesling
Variety: Riesling
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: $5.95 Sale
Wine Critic Review (Provided by Vintage Cellar)Punchy lime and lemon mark this off-dry Riesling with a staccato rhythm, adding edge to honeyed tones of peach and honeysuckle. Exceptionally priced, it’s satisfying and elegant.
My Review: The nose was pleasant and reminded me of sweet pineapple. The tongue was also sweet pineapple and had low acidity. I really enjoyed this wine and could drink it by itself.

Tasting - "Crane Lake Petite Sirah 2013"

Name: Crane Lake Petite Sirah
Variety: Sirah
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: $5.95 Sale
Wine Critic Review (Provided by Vintage Cellar)Shows a certain rustic simplicity now, with youthfully jammy flavors of blackberries, cherries and currants, sprinkled with cocoa and pepper and wrapped into dusty tannins.
My Review: The scent reminded me of blackberries, dark chocolate, and oak. I could taste the blackberries and dark chocolate. It had a bitter finish. Overall, the tongue was on the sweeter side yet had underlying oak and dark chocolate notes, which I quite enjoyed. I would drink this wine again.

Tasting - "Yellow Tail Reserve Merlot 2010"

Name: Yellow Tail Reserve Merlot
Variety: Merlot
Region: South Eastern
Country: Australia
Year: 2010
Price: $12 Regular, $6.95 Sale
Wine Critic Review (Provided by Vintage Cellar)Round, velvety and mouthfilling, this is a satisfying Merlot at a bargain price. Aromas of black cherries and herbs fold in hints of cinnamon and mocha, while the flavors are generally fruity, but with a slightly tomatoey note. Soft on the finish. Drink now.
My Review: The scent reminded me of blackberries. I couldn't taste much and it was on the bitter side for me. I disagree with the critic that it was soft on the finish--I thought it had a hard finish. I wouldn't drink this wine again.

Tasting - "Takutai Pinot Gris 2009"

Name: Takutai Pinot Gris
Variety: Pinot Gris
Region: Nelson
Country: New Zealand
Year: 2009
Price: $21 Regular, $6.95 Sale
Wine Critic Review (Provided by Vintage Cellar)Since this wine weighs in at 14%, the fruit was clearly very ripe. That ripeness is reflected in the flavors as well, which feature nectarine and honey accented by hints of white pepper. It’s full bodied and lush, with a long finish that mingles the sensations of sweet and spicy.
My Review: The nose was fresh and reminded me of pineapple and melon. It was very bitter on the tongue for me and tasted like melon. I wouldn't have this wine again.

Tasting - "Mars and Venus Sauvignon Blanc 2013"

Name: Mars and Venus Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: 2013
Price: $10 Regular, $5.95 Sale
Wine Critic Review (Provided by Vintage Cellar)Citrus and gooseberry aromas are mild but typical of the variety. A basic citrus palate delivers modest tangerine and nectarine flavors which lead to a mild, pithy finish showing light citric notes.
My Review: The scent was pleasantly fresh and citrusy. On the tongue it was dry with a balanced amount of acidity. I enjoyed this wine and would try it with a creamy dish.

Dinner - "622 North (American)"

This past Wednesday, my boyfriend Josh and I went to 622 North in Blacksburg, Virginia for a belated Valentine's Day dinner. I took this opportunity to try my first food and wine pairings. Our waitress knew which wines to recommend with each dish like the back of her hand. She also suggested a "half flight" special that included four wines in half the usual "by the glass" portion, which was perfect for the assignment (3 for me, 1 for him!). Needless to say, we did the half flight special and followed every one of her recommendations, to great results.

Josh and I at 622 North for a belated Valentine's Day dinner.
For the appetizer, we had Spinach Artichoke Dip with tortilla chips. This was one of the most delicious spinach and artichoke dips I've ever had. It was the perfect amount of creaminess and flavor and the tortilla chips complimented it perfectly--thick-cut and lightly salted so as not to overtake the flavor of the dip. For my entrée, I had medium-rare Atlantic Salmon with sugared almond pieces and a cranberry sauce. The salmon was flaky with more a subtle salmon taste and the sugared almond pieces were a sweet, crunchy accent to it. I wasn't as big of a fan of the cranberry sauce that it was doused in because it was sweet to the point of tasting like cranberry jam. To top off the meal, we had New York Cheesecake with chocolate sauce and raspberries for dessert. It was just the right temperature, texture with a soft sweetness that comes with New York cheesecake. The tasty raspberries and chocolate sauce made it even more delicious, although I would have been perfectly happy eating it by itself.

For this assignment, the waitress helped me match three wines to match with each of the three courses. I then mixed it up and tried each wine with every course. The results were quite eye-opening!

2013 Barone Fini Pinot Grigio

Baron Fini Pinot Grigio image from http://goo.gl/DJIKOV.
The first wine of the night was a 2013 Barone Fini Pinot Grigio from Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy. This white wine is 100% pinot grigio. The wine smelled fresh, with a light floral and fruity scent. It had a slight bite to it and finished dry. In my opinion, it was a very well balanced wine, with a pleasant bouquet, medium body and a tongue right between sweet and dry. It was the only half flight glass I could finish by itself.

The wine was paired with the Spinach Artichoke Dip appetizer. With the dip, I didn't think the wine tasted any different. If anything, the acidity was brought out just a touch more. It was a very nice companion to the dip however, a refreshing finish to wash down the creamy artichoke.

When I tried the pinot grigio with the salmon, not only did the salmon's flavor intensify, but the salmon brought out the sweetness and floral taste of the pinot grigio. This caused the two to clash. With the cheescake, the acidity was brought out and clashed with the sweetness of the cheescake. However, I did enjoy the freshness and lighter feel of the pinot grigio paired with the creamy cheescake.

2010 Paraiso Pinot Noir

Paraiso Vineyards Pinot Noir image from http://goo.gl/x4QyWn.

The second wine of the night was a 2010 Paraiso Vineyards Pinot Noir from Santa Lucia Highlands, California. This red wine is 100% pinot noir. It smelled intensely of dark berries and alcohol. On the tongue, it was like velvet in its smoothness. It was the perfect balance between dry and sweet and also had a smooth finish. I couldn't taste much of the flavors that I smelled.

Now, this is where it gets interesting. This wine was paired with my salmon. With the salmon, all of a sudden all the flavors that I smelled but couldn't taste before were brought out in the wine! Wow! The tongue was brought out a lot stronger, specifically the alcohol and dark berry essence.

With the dip, the artichoke also brought out intense alcohol and dark berry flavors, but because they were both rich in flavor they clashed. When I tried it with the cheesecake, a bitterness came out that hid the flavor of the cheesecake and did not taste good.

Taylor Fladgate Fine Ruby Port (Non-Vintage)

Taylor Fladgate Fine Ruby Port (Non-Vintage).
The third and last wine of the night was a non-vintage Taylor Fladgate Fine Ruby Port from Portugal. Non-vintage means it does not age well and immediately ready for consumption without decanting. This port is made of a red wine blend. I could barely discern a berry smell through the intense alcohol nose. It tastes extremely sweet with a surprisingly light body.

The port was paired with the cheesecake. I thought the sweetness of the port was even more overwhelming with the cheesecake so I wouldn't have them together in the future.

New York Cheesecake paired with Taylor Fladgate Fine Ruby Port.

When I tried the port with the salmon, the sweetness of the cranberry sauce and the sweetness of the port actually balanced each other out and complimented each other. As for the dip, the artichoke taste was brought out but the richness of the dip and the sweetness of the port clashed.

Thoughts

Overall, I enjoyed eating the food with wine that paired well with them. My favorite overall was the pinot grigio paired with the dip. However, for me, there were too many varieties of wine for my stomach to handle in one meal. In the future, I would have wine with as much as the appetizer and entrée but probably not with dessert as I usually enjoy the sweetness of the dessert in itself. I would be perfectly happy with just one wine a meal and up to two.

Tasting - "Opera Prima Pink Moscato"

Name: Opera Prima Pink Moscato
Variety: 95% Muscat, 3% Tempranillo
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: Unknown
Price: $10 Regular, $6.95 Sale
Wine Critic Review (Provided by Vintage Cellar)This fine sparkling presents an intense aroma of fresh berries and tropical fruits with hints of white flower petals. Delicate bubbles caress the palate offering a silky and pleasant sweetness well balanced by a crisp, refreshing finish. Ideal on its own, as an aperitif or with all types of sweets and desserts. Serve it very cold, between 7 and 9°.
My Review: The nose was strongly floral and fruity. It was very carbonated with a light body and tasted the same as the nose profile. I would definitely enjoy this drink in a party setting by itself.

My Review: This wine smelled like dark berries. It tasted bitter to me, with a bite at the finish. I would let it age a lot more to settle the tannins down on this wine.

Name: Riebeek Cellars Shiraz
Variety: Shiraz
Region: Swartland
Country: South Africa
Year: 2013

Wine Critic Review (Provided by Vintage Cellar)Often referred to as Shiraz Country, the Riebeek Valley is renowned for exceptional Shiraz wines. The Riebeek Shiraz is a lively rich wine, full bodied with a subdued smokiness on the nose and a pallet of ripe fruit and interesting spice.
My Review: It smelled like dark berries. The tongue is on the drier side, with a slight bite and smooth, buttery finish. This is the kind of wine I enjoy with food, specifically steak for this one. I liked it enough to take home a bottle!

Tasting - "Petrucco Ribolla Gialla 2009"

Name: Petrucco Ribolla Gialla Colli Orientali del Friuli
Variety: Ribolla Gialla
Region: Friuli
Country: Italy
Year: 2009
Price: $21 Regular, $7.95 Sale
Wine Critic Review (Provided by Vintage Cellar)This well-priced Friulano would pair nicely with spicy Indian or Thai food thanks to the creaminess and richness of its mouthfeel. In addition, the wine offers a solid bouquet of peach and melon that would not compete with fragrant ingredients.
My Review: The nose was fresh with melon notes. In my opinion, it was very dry. It didn't taste like anything distinctive. I wouldn't drink it again, since in my opinion it did not have much to it at all.

Tasting - "Le Jade Sauvignon Blanc 2013"

NameLe Jade Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Languedoc
Country: France

Year: 2013
Price: $10 Regular, $5.95 Sale
Wine Critic Review (Provided by Vintage Cellar)Silvery straw color. Lively aromas and flavors of pineapple, yellow apple, melon, and Meyer lemon with a silky, bright, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a tingling, complex, medium-long finish with notes of lemongrass, pear, and lemon with no tannins and no oak. Bright and crisp with layers of juicy pineapple, pear, lemongrass and ripe melon make this perfect for repeated sipping or enhancing fresh farm to table cookery.
My Review: The nose was fresh, with melon and citrus notes. It started sweet with the same nose profile, was quickly taken over by acidity, and finished dry. This was an interesting wine, since there were so many layers to it. The sweetness got me to drink it in the first place, the mid palate kept me interested, and the dry finish made me want to keep drinking it. Even though the aspects of the wine were so separate, I liked it enough to get a bottle to take home! I would like to try it with a creamy dish or appetizer.

Name: Ilurce Tempranillo
Variety: Moscato
Region: Rioja
Country: Spain
Year: 2008

Wine Critic Review (Provided by Vintage Cellar)Dark purple. Zesty, youthfully medicinal aromas of dark berries, licorice and cracked pepper. Juicy and fresh, with smooth texture and sweet cherry and spice flavors framed by dusty tannins. Finishes with a suggestion of slightly roasted fruits and good clinging persistence. Delivers a lot of power and richness for the money.
My Review: This wine smelled of dark berries and alcohol to me. While the tongue did not make any sort of statement, the aftertaste was smooth and had a nice medium weight to it. I would like to try this wine again with food.

Name: San Elias Carmenere
Variety: Camenere

Wine Critic Review (Provided by Vintage Cellar)This medium-bodied red offers roasted plum, kirsch, sage and game notes, with light tannins supporting the spicy finish.
My Review: This was a dark, dark wine. It smelled of some sort of dark berry (plum did come to mind). The taste was pungent to me, like burnt wood. I did not like this wine because it was very strong and bitter and would not drink it again.

Tasting - "Santa Luz Sauvignon Blanc 2013"

Name: Santa Luz Sauvignon Blanc Alba
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Valle Central
Country: Chile
Year: 2013
Price: $11 Regular, $6.95 Sale
Wine Critic Review (Provided by Vintage Cellar)Like any good Sauvignon Blanc, this opens with oceanic aromas of citrus fruits, sea foam and minerality. In the mouth, it is juicy and stony, with washing acidity. Flavors of honeydew, lime and a nice grassiness finish firm, with good backbone. Drink this with salads, shellfish and ceviche.
My Review: I think I'm starting to get the hang of this! It had a fresh smell, of citrus fruit (melon specifically) and alcohol. The tongue was overwhelmingly acidic and I couldn't taste any of the fruit. The finish contained a pleasant amount of heat. As I didn't favor the acidity and lack of taste, I wouldn't drink this wine again.

Variety: 100% Nero d'Avola
Region: Sicily

Price: $14 Regular, $6.95 Sale
Wine Critic Review (Provided by Vintage Cellar)The grapes are soft pressed and the juice is placed in stainless steel along with the skins for a maceration of 8 to 10 days with daily pumping over of the juice to extract more color and sweet tannins. Dense ruby red with violet reflections. Lush and ripe bouquet full of mulberries, blackberries and spice. Harmonious and well balanced with good berry fruit in a spicy background. Excellent with lamb, grilled and barbecued meats, dishes with olives or capers and seasoned cheeses.
My Review: It smelled of alcohol and some fruit. The tongue was slightly fruity and somewhat bitter. I might try this wine again paired with the meats as suggested; it may provide a nice balance.
